The Immigration Legal Services Program offers limited legal immigration services to foreign born individuals and their families with a broad spectrum of immigration needs, most of who reside in Tehama County. The Immigration Legal Services Program helps to strengthen families, lift families out of poverty, raise new Americans and new voters, and strengthen American society.

The NVCSS Immigration Legal Services assists the community in understanding immigration laws and practices by conducting seminars, workshops, and classes in the community to educate the public on immigration matters. Linguistically and culturally appropriate outreach ensures that foreign-born individuals and their families learn about pertinent topics in immigration.  The ultimate goal of the Immigration Legal Services Program is immigrant integration into American society.

The Immigration Legal Services Program provides limited legal immigration services, including the following:

  1. Naturalization & Citizenship Applications
  2. Citizenship Preparation
  3. Green Card Renewals
  4. Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) Initial & Renewals
  5. Employment Authorization Applications
  6. Translations
  7. Legal Service Referrals

The Immigration Legal Services Program is recognized by the Office of Legal Access Programs (OLAP)* and services are offered and overseen by DOJ-accredited NVCSS staff.

Because immigrants living in poverty face significant challenges, the Immigration Program utilizes a wrap-around strategy that includes services designed to help people overcome barriers toward the acquisition of the tools they need to thrive.

The process to help acquire the tools to thrive has four key components:

  1. Recognize immigrants bring a diverse set of skills and values
  2. Resolve immediate needs and problems
  3. Identify opportunities for growth
  4. Monitor progress towards goals

Outcomes:

  1. Legalization
  2. Bilingual Skills
  3. Ability to Access Resources
  4. Ready for Immigration Reform
  5. Life Skills
  6. Technology Skills

Eligibility: Clients’ eligibility is determined through the assessment process that screens out clients with highly complex immigration backgrounds, such as bars from entry, deportations, currently placed in removal proceedings, to just name a few. Clients who meet the eligibility criteria will be served according to their specific need.
