NVCSS administers a comprehensive CalFresh Healthy Living program funded by the U.S. Department of Agriculture. Our program serves residential, school and wellness center sites in six counties (Shasta, Butte, Glenn, Tehama, Trinity and Siskiyou). CFHL staff deliver nutrition, garden and physical education to promote healthy lifestyles and increase access to healthy foods, and collaborate with community partners to further enhance the nutritional resources available to those in need.

CFHL nutrition educators deliver food demonstrations, after-school cooking classes, distribute healthy recipes and weekly health tips, conduct physical activities and walks to the farmers market. Our team also provides cooked meals through the Healthy Eating Helping Hands project, and through our Little Pantry program provides food donations to students most at risk of food insecurity.

CFHL garden educators support our sites to grow, maintain, harvest and cook fresh produce in edible gardens. Educators deliver garden lessons and activities in classes, provide lesson kits, and supplies and training for garden site teams. Staff also collaborate with community partners, such as UC Master Gardeners and College Corps fellows, to provide horticulture support, maintain and sustain edible gardens. Garden educators also support sites with circulating hydroponics systems, greenhouses and worm compost bins. Garden staff share planting schedules and harvesting information to garden teams.
