CalWorks

The CalWorks (California Work Opportunity and Responsibility to Kids) program is offered through NVCSS at the Corning Family Resource Center. CalWorks collaborates with the Tehama County Department of Social Services, to assist parents in preparing for, finding and retaining employment. Employment is key for families to successfully transition from public assistance to becoming self-sufficient.

The program offers informational and job related skills, while focusing on building upon individual strengths. By providing the framework for job searches, resume building and interview techniques, the CalWorks program increases the self-efficacy of individuals.

All workshops are designed to provide participants with the skills needed to be successful in the workplace. Emphasis is on these three components:

  • Successfully obtaining employment
  • Job retention
  • Career advancement

The program is designed to be strength based while providing family empowerment.

Who is eligible for the service?

In order to be eligible for services, individuals must be referred from the Welfare to Work Program. The individual’s employment training worker will make the referral. There are no restrictions on who can be referred, as long as they have children.

Classes offered count as “Core Hours” toward referred clients work plans. Members from the public may also attend the classes.

Unique or special services offered

This program offers a wide range of job specific tools to help individuals be successful. The instructor for the courses is bilingual, which serves the majority of the demographic population of service recipients. Group and one-on-one resume and computer assistance are offered. Classes/workgroups offered include;

  • Job Readiness
  • Literacy for employment
  • Basic technology skills
  • Resume creation
  • Interview practice

Funding for this program is provided by Tehama County Department of Social Services.
